Morris U19 Girls Rugby

2007 MetNY Girls U19 Division Champions

Morris Rugby Football Club sponsors a Girls High School rugby program each spring, building upon the success of our town/recreation-based youth programs. If you haven’t tried playing rugby yet, now is the time! The program is run as a full contact U-19 program, with weekly games scheduled against other local high school and Club U-19 programs.

The program is intended for girls 13 to 18 yrs of age or in grades 8 - 12.  High School Seniors turning 19 before September 1, 2008 are not eligible. Training sessions are designed to help the new player develop the running, kicking, passing and space strategy skills required to ensure a fundamental knowledge of the game.  It will also ensure players are properly prepared if they express interest in continuing their rugby playing careers into college and beyond.

We start with our Sunday Skills sessions in the Fall which is a 6-week introduction to the sport run jointly with the Boys programs. We encourage participants who want to continue in the Spring to sign-up during these sessions.

Pre-season indoor training sessions start in early December and run until the end of February. They are held on Thursday nights from 7-9pm at the Indoor Sports Pavilion (ISP) in Randolph, NJ.

Practices and games are held at the rugby field in front of Mennen Arena, in Morristown, starting at the end of February (weather permitting) and continue through June. Practices will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings, with matches played on Sunday afternoons. Games are played at various locations in NJ and NY.

Of course we would love it if players could make every practice and game, but we realize that many of them have other obligations. At this level we are most interested in introducing players to the full tackle rugby game. It is our hope that they will develop the same love for the game we have and will choose to stay with it, continuing to play in college, and beyond. In short, we want them to have fun and learn the game. However, we do need the core of the team to be at practice in order make that practice effective. Therefore, it is our request that they make at least one practice per week and as many games as possible.

USARFU Certified rugby coaches from the Morris Rugby Club make up the coaching staff. This will be our fourth season and looks to be our biggest yet, so come out and join the fun!!
